Ingredients:
- 1 lbs (500g) dried split peas
- 1 lbs (500g) chopped ham
- 1 onion chopped
- 3 Tbsp (50ml) oil
- 4oz – 6oz (120g-180g) carrots (shredded or chopped)
- 4 cloves garlic
- 6 cups broth or 6 cups water with boullion cubes
- 1 cup water and 2 Tbsp flour (optional) for thicker soup (see below)
Instructions:
- Prep the ingredients
- Saute the chopped onion in 3 Tbsp oil, once translucent add carrots and garlic
- After 5 mins, add the ham, Cook for another 5 mins
- Soak the split peas, remove anything that floats, spot check for any stones
- Add 6 cups broth or water and spices, bring to boil. Simmer for 45-60 mins.
- Optional: For a thicker soup, once your soup is pretty much ready, mix 1 cup of water and 3 Tbsp flour, mix well so there are no lumps.
- Add the mix to the soup and boil for another minute or two constantly stirring so there are no lumps.
